Abstract

Background. The study of motive’s structure of works by N. V. Gogol is of interest to literary criticism. There have been conducted no special studies on the implementation of the motives of harmony and discord in the works of Gogol, hence this article is topical. The goal of the study is to analyze the manifestations of the motives of harmony and discord in natural descriptions in the works by N. V. Gogol.
Materials and methods. Implementation of the research task was accomplished on the basis of the works by N. V. Gogol (cycles of stories «Evenings on a farm near Dikanka», «Mirgorod», «St. Petersburg novels») and of studing the motive’s structure of texts by Gogol. Methodological potential includes the immanent analysis of the motive’s structure of works.
Results. The author investigated the implementation of the motives of harmony and discord in artistic texts by N. V. Gogol, in particular in the natural descriptions. The researcher identified the contrast between the past and the present, dream and reality, embodied in any of lush descriptions of magnificent nature (harmony, the past, the dream) and disturbing, bizarre landscapes (disorder, chaos, present, reality).
